Attention Deficit Disorder - Part II

Attention deficit disorder is a behavioral condition that usually affects children. It is a disorder characterized by persistent hyperactivity, impulsiveness and inattentiveness.

Researches have been conducted to dig deep into the causes of attention deficit disorder. But to this day, the actual and precise cause has not yet fully established. Many areas are being looked into such as genetics, neurotransmitter disorders in the brain, chemical imbalances in the brain, as well as outside factors such as the influence of television and video games.

Attention deficit disorder and the family

Attention deficit disorder is a global behavioral condition and it is estimated to have caused 8 to 10 percent of school children. Statistics also show that boys are more prone to attention deficit disorder than girls of the same age. Young adults are also reported to have this condition and it is assumed as a childhood condition that have retained since.

As parents are now becoming more aware of attention deficit disorder, there has been a rise in the population of individuals inflicted with this condition. It poses alarming reactions from the medical sector, but it is truly good to know that families are becoming aware of their loved ones' condition.

There are instances that the child will outgrow his/her attention deficit disorder. Although some may not be successful in this case, there are certain treatments that can help improve the behavior of the individual as he/she grows.

There is no specific medication or drug that can relieve attention deficit disorder. Stimulants, anti-stimulants and supplements may be prescribed by doctors, but these are not directly targeting the cause of the child's condition.

Behavioral programs, special schools and therapy may help improve the child's condition to help him/her to outgrow attention deficit disorder in due time.

A family that has a loved one with attention deficit disorder needs to be extra patient and supportive. Families should encourage and show understanding to their loved one to help them overcome their condition. There may be therapies and treatments available, but it is the support of the family that will help the individual the most.
